In the sports promotion group of the Bundeswehr Frankenberg (SpFördGrpBw Frankenberg) 60 top athletes are currently (05/2016) organized. In the Wettiner barracks, the athletes are supported by the directing staff in organizing training, competitions and courses. The aim is to offer top athletes the necessary framework for their professional and sporting careers. The sports promotion group is part of the Bundeswehr's top sports promotion. The top athletes organized in the sports promotion group include the decathletes Rico Freimuth and Michael Schrader , the shot putter Christina Schwanitz , the Nordic combined Eric Frenzel and the ski jumper Richard Freitag .
Structure and tasks
Under the direction of three directing staff, the Bundeswehr sports promotion group in Frankenberg coordinates all the necessary measures in accordance with the requirements of the Armed Forces Base Command (KdoSKB) in order to create the framework for achieving top athletic performance and at the same time to secure military training. The sports promotion group works closely with the Olympiastützpunkt Chemnitz / Dresden and its performance centers and bases in Altenberg, Oberwiesenthal, Klingenthal, Dresden and Chemnitz as well as the Olympiastützpunkt Leipzig . This cooperation is the prerequisite for sporting success. Sixty sports soldiers are currently on duty in Frankenberg. In addition to the classic winter sports such as cross-country skiing, biathlon, Nordic combined, ski jumping, figure skating and speed skating, short track and luge, the summer sports water jumping and athletics with the disciplines decathlon, 110 m hurdles, triple jump, shot put and hammer throw are represented.

The Bundeswehr sports promotion group in Frankenberg was put into service in October 1993. It is one of 15 sports promotion groups nationwide. Subordinated to the state command of Saxony and managed by the command armed forces base, it is housed in the Wettin barracks in Frankenberg / Saxony.
Former top athletes such as Michael Ballack , Ingo Steuer and Mandy Wötzel , Sylke Otto , Claudia Nystad , Anke Wischnewski or Torsten Wustlich also served in the Bundeswehr sports promotion group in Frankenberg. Its track record includes 28 medals at Olympic Games, 109 medals at World Championships and 109 medals at European Championships. This makes the sports promotion group of the Bundeswehr Frankenberg one of the most successful in Germany.
