It lies on the Trans-Siberian Railway (kilometer 1163) and on the Chepza River . The distance to Moscow is about 1160 km and to the republic capital Izhevsk 180 km. The ancestors of the former Soviet head of state Mikhail Gorbachev on his mother's side lived in Glazov for a long time as unfree farmers.
history
The place was first mentioned in writing in 1678, at that time as the village Glasowo, which got its name from a local noble family with the family name Glasow.
In 1780 Glazov received city status as part of a regional reform and was awarded to the province of Vyatka . At that time, however, the place did not even have 1000 inhabitants and was still considered an extremely insignificant and remote city for a long time. For this reason it was also used as a place of exile . The well-known author Vladimir Korolenko also lived there in political exile in the 1880s.
At the end of the 19th century a railway line was laid through the city, which later became part of the Trans-Siberian Railway . This led to the development of agricultural trade in Glazov in the early 20th century. The first industry did not develop here until the Soviet era .
In the late 20th century, Glazov was expanded mainly with new residential areas made of prefabricated buildings. The old town, which was built according to a general plan from the 1780s and also includes a number of traditional wooden houses, has also been preserved to this day.
