history

Sarapul has been known in writing as a settlement since 1596. At that time there was the wooden Assumption Church (Russian Voznesenskaya zerkow ), after which the village was originally called Voznesenskoye . The local population lived mainly from the grain trade and fishing. It is believed that the name Sarapul , which later became established, comes from the Chuvash language and literally means “yellow fish” ( сарӑ пулӑ ), which could mean the sterlet that was once abundant here .

In 1780 the settlement was granted city rights. Thereafter, the place was built according to a general plan that has left its mark to this day: With several historical church buildings, merchant houses and residential houses (some in Art Nouveau ) as well as a former observation post of the fire brigade, most of the architectural monuments among the cities of Udmurtia are located here. In the 19th century, the leather and shoe industries developed in Sarapul.

In 1939 the city was included in the Udmurt ASSR , which has been the Russian republic of Udmurtia since 1991.
