The Udmurt ASSR ( Udmurt Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic ) was an autonomous Soviet republic in the Russian Federative Socialist Soviet Republic (RSFSR) within the Soviet Union . It existed from 1934 to 1991. The area lies north of the lower Kama , is 42,100 square kilometers and is now inhabited by around 1.7 million people. The capital was Izhevsk . The region is characterized by agriculture and forestry. But iron and coal are also mined. The Udmurts make up only about a third of the population, but the Udmurt language was and is the second official language. Since 1991 the region has been a federal subject of Russia as the Udmurt Republic .
