The Allgäuland-Käsereien GmbH were from 1901 to 2011 a milk processing company based in Ahegg, a hamlet of Wangen in the Allgäu . In 2011 the company was taken over by Arla Foods and acted as Arla Foods Käsereien GmbH until 2014 . In 2014 the headquarters in Wangen was relocated to Sonthofen .

History and structure today

Starting position

In 1901, the year the company was founded, the milk price was between six and eight pfennigs per liter. This did not cover the dairy farmers' own costs . Hugo Farny, the father of Oskar Farny , who later became a member of the Reichstag , called on the farmers in the Württemberg Allgäu to help themselves. The result of the deliberations was the United Dairies of the Württemberg Allgäu Dürren , or VKD for short.

VKD

The farmers took the processing of the milk and the distribution of the manufactured products into their own hands and responsibility. Soon the milk price was 13.3 pfennigs. The cooperative set itself the goal of producing the highest possible quality. A laboratory was set up and quality controls introduced in the stables and dairies. The special cheese of the VKD called Allgäuer Emmentaler became a quality term and at the end of the twenties the VKD was considered the largest producer of Emmental cheese in the republic. At the same time, exports began to increase, both to the cheese-making countries Italy and France and to the USA. After the Second World War, the merger with smaller cheese dairies from the private sector led to the growth of economically working cheese factories.

Products of the 2012 discontinued "white line" from Allgäuland-Käsereien GmbH

In 1988 the VKD became the Allgäuland-Käsereien GmbH . Innovative products and specialties were developed with Allgäuland and mountain farmers , including one of the very first grated cheese mixes. Allgäuland-Käsereien GmbH works in accordance with the DIN EN ISO 9002 quality management system . As part of the environmental management system , the Kisslegg and Schönau ( Grünenbach ) companies have been certified in accordance with DIN EN ISO 14001 . From a regionally rooted cooperative dairy, a company that is now active internationally and with above-average growth rates in the industry comparison emerged. The Allgäuland cheese dairies are now among the 15 largest German milk processing companies. The largest sales focus is on the area of discount retail chains. In 2009 the company employed 386 people, 40 of whom were trainees. With 2,986 milk suppliers, an annual milk volume of 589 million kilograms and around 33,600 tons of cheese including processed cheese , an annual turnover of 403 million euros was achieved. Sales have increased tenfold over the past 10 years.

In 2010 the operations in Augsburg, Tübingen and Dettingen were closed. A year later, Arla Foods showed interest in taking over the company. On November 8, 2011, the planned takeover of Allgäuland by Arla was approved by the EU Commission as part of its merger control . In addition to the Allgäuland-Käsereien GmbH, the takeover affects AL Dienstleistungs-GmbH and all subsidiaries. At a works meeting on November 14, 2011, it was announced that the Riedlinger Milchwerk will be closed in the first half of 2012, 110 jobs will be lost. Managing director Paul Ritter was released. The dairy farmers' business assets decreased by 15 million euros. The new CEO was Torben Olsen, who is also CEO of Arla Foods Deutschland GmbH , the German headquarters of Arlas. On January 31, 2012, the owner discontinued the “white line” (fresh milk, cream, yoghurt, etc.). Since then, only cheese (“yellow line”) has been produced in all Allgäuland dairies.
