Claudia Massari (born January 16, 1966 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen ) is a former figure skater of German-Italian origin.

The early years and sporting successes

The daughter of an Italian and a German grew up in Grainau at the foot of the Zugspitze , where her parents worked in a hotel. As a young girl she taught herself to skate on the frozen Eibsee . At the beginning of the 1980s, she spoke to the successful coach of TUS Waldau Stuttgart, Karel Fajfr , at the German figure skating championships , who took the German-Italian woman, who weighs just 1.57 meters and weighs 42 kilograms, under his wing in 1981.

Claudia Massari was considered an ambitious natural talent and soon achieved top performances under the tough hands of her trainer Fajfr. Together with her partner Leonardo Azzola , she won the German championships in pair skating in 1983 and 1984 and, together with Azzola, also took part in the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo . There, however, both reached only 13th place. The following year she won the German pair skating championships with another partner, Daniele Caprano. In view of these successes in a very short time, the attractive and lively redhead quickly became the darling of the German media.

A stubborn injury - Claudia Massari suffered from a non-healing inflammation of the bursa on her ankle - finally forced her to withdraw from ice skating in 1985.
