Remo Giazotto (born September 4, 1910 in Rome , † August 26, 1998 in Pisa ) was an Italian musicologist , music critic and composer .

Life

Giazotto studied piano and composition at the Conservatory of Milan and literature and philosophy at the University of Genoa . From 1932 he was a critic of the Rivista musicale italiana , 1945–1949 also its editor. From 1949 to 1977 he worked for the public broadcaster RAI , initially as director of chamber music programs, from 1966 as director of international programs. He was also chairman of the RAI's examination board and editor of its series of composer biographies.

As a music historian, Giazotto taught at the University of Florence from 1957 to 1969 . In 1962 he was appointed to the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia , from 1967 he was co-editor of the Nuova rivista musicale italiana . In addition to several books on the musical history of Genoa , he wrote romanticizing composers' biographies ( Tomaso Albinoni , Alessandro Stradella , Antonio Vivaldi and Giovanni Battista Viotti ; for the latter also a thematic catalog of the works, marked with G).

He is the father of the physicist Adalberto Giazotto .

Compositions

Giazotto was best known for the publication of the Adagio in G minor for strings and organ (1958), which is said to be based on fragments of a trio sonata by Tomaso Albinoni , the authenticity of which has not yet been proven. Not least because of numerous adaptations and its use in several films, it is one of the most popular works of classical music today .

In addition to the Adagio , Giazotto composed mainly piano pieces (including Au Tombeau de Ravel , 1957; Svago musicale , 1962) and songs (including 6 Canzoni napoletane based on poems by Salvatore di Giacomo , 1955).
