He then got by with various jobs and appeared in bars on the side. He founded the band The Untouchables in the mid-1990s . In 1997, Luc Plamondon was on the show Garand appeared on. He invited him to an audition in Paris to play Quasimodo in the musical Notre-Dame de Paris . The drama debuted in 1998 at the Palais des congrès de Paris ; the soundtrack (with Daniel Lavoie, among others ) was 17, the single Belle 60 weeks in the French charts , of which 18 weeks at number one.

His first album Seul was released in 2000 and the live album Seul ... Avec Vous a year later . In 2003 his album Reviens was released . In 2000 he recorded the duet "Sous le vent" with Celine Dion , which became a hit in France and Switzerland . In 2004 he recorded "La rivière de notre enfance" with Michel Sardou , who is well known in France. This duet was also successful. In 2008 Garou's first English-language album was released. The first single from it was "Stand Up", a song written by Rob Thomas . The CD also contained a cover version of the Melanie C hit "First Day of My Life".

He regularly takes part in the annual Les Enfoirés charity concert , the largest media event in the Francophone world.
