Emily Jordan Bear (born August 30, 2001 in Rockford , Illinois ) is an American pianist , singer , songwriter and composer . As a child prodigy, she appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres Show on October 3, 2007 and subsequently 5 more times . After more than nine years, she was a guest on the show again in June 2019. On March 24, 2008, she played at the White House at the invitation of George W. Bush . She has given several concerts at Carnegie Hall (2010,2011,2019) and the Hollywood Bowl (2011,2017,2018,2019), the Montreux Jazz Festival (2011/2013) and at the Jazzopen Stuttgart 2015 as "Artist in Residence". Her studio album Diversity was produced in 2013 by her mentor Quincy Jones . She dedicated her EP Into the Blue, released in January 2017 under her own label and recorded with her jazz trio, to Quincy Jones. Both releases reached Top 10 positions on the Billboard Jazz Charts. The ASCAP praised their compositions with two Morton Gould Young Composer Awards and two Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Awards. In November / December 2017 she performed at Night of the Proms as a classical headliner in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg. This makes her the youngest musical interpreter in the history of the concert series. For the film Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase , which was released in March 2019 for Warner Bros. Entertainment , she wrote both the title track and a song for the credits. She was also the singer on both songs.

Life

Emily Bear is the youngest of three siblings, her parents are Brian and Andrea Bear.

When she was two years old, her grandmother Merle Langs Greenberg recognized her talent. Emily Bear began taking proper piano lessons with Emilio del Rosario at the Music Institute of Chicago at the age of four , having started composing at the age of three. At the age of 7 she won the ASCAP Foundation Morton Gould Young Composer Award for her piece Northern Lights . She gave her first public concert at the age of five. She has appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres Show six times and played for President George W. Bush in the White House when she was six . When she was eight years old, her oeuvre already comprised 350 works, the best of which were published in 5 songbooks by Hal Leonard.

She had piano lessons with Mary Sauer, former pianist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra . In addition, she took classical piano lessons with Yoheved “Veda” Kaplinsky ( Juilliard School of Music ) and learned jazz piano with Frank Kimbrough (Juilliard School of Music) and film composition with Ron Sadoff ( New York University ). She received lessons in music theory from Marshall Griffith and Andrew Focks (Cleveland Institute of Music)

Bear attended high school until May 2017, from which she graduated summa cum laude after two instead of four years. She has lived in Los Angeles since 2018, but also studies at the Berklee College of Music in Boston .

In addition to jazz, she is primarily interested in the field of film music. Although she does not strive for a career as a classical concert pianist, she has always performed classical concerts in recent years, B. at the age of seven with Mozart's 23rd piano concerto, at the age of eleven with the 1st movement of the piano concerto (Schumann) , at 13 she played George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue . In April 2016 she performed the piano concerto (Grieg) with the Rockford Symphony Orchestra .

She became aware of Quincy Jones in late 2010, signed her in December 2011 and became her mentor. At one of his concerts in 2011, she performed her version of Jack Fina's Bumble Boogie at the Hollywood Bowl in front of 11,000 people . She also played Miss Celie's Blues (from the movie The Color Purple ), with Gloria Estefan , Patti Austin , Siedah Garrett and Nikki Yanofsky . In the same year she performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival and the Castell Festival in Peralada, Spain, as a soloist and with Esperanza Spalding . In 2011 Sat1 broadcast a German documentary about them.

In 2012 she played the song “Diversity” at Art on Ice in Zurich, which she originally composed for a meeting with the Dalai Lama , to the live performance of figure skaters Aljona Savchenko / Robin Szolkowy . They use the song later for the gala after their 4th world championship title. In the same year Bear also performed at the Life Ball in Vienna.

Her studio album Diversity is Quincy Jones' first solo album since his collaboration with Michael Jackson. The album, distributed by Concord Records , which received good reviews, briefly reached # 1 on iTunes Jazz USA after an interview on National Public Radio and placed # 5 on the Billboard Jazz Charts. In 2013 Bear was back in Montreux. At the concert for Quincy Jones' 80th birthday, she played a medley of songs from her recently released album Diversity . She then gave other concerts in Korea and Japan with Quincy Jones and the musicians.

One of her skills is her “on the spot composing”. She composes melodies to spontaneously told stories. She also sings some of the songs she has interpreted on the piano; In 2014 she made an appearance on "The Queen Latifah Show", where she accompanied herself to The Girl from Ipanema .

In July 2015 she was artist in residence at the Stuttgart Jazzopen. There she gave three concerts. On July 6, she was the opening act for David Sanborn in the Spardawelt. One day later she played after Justin Kauflin with her trio, bassist Peter Slavov and drummer Mark McLean, in the BIX Jazzclub . After all, she was the opening act again on July 11th at the Schlossplatz in Stuttgart, this time for the French singer Zaz . During these days, the SWR's Kunscht program produced a feature about her called “Talent has a name - Emily Bear”.

Emily Bear was also part of the original Broadway Cast Recording of the musical Doktor Zhivago in 2015, which was released in early May 2015. In an additional track she plays a piano version of the song "He's There".

In October 2015, Bear and the Rockford Symphony Orchestra performed their latest orchestral work, "The Bravest Journey", in their hometown of Rockford at a veteran event with keynote speaker General Colin Powell . In addition to this commissioned work, she also composed all the scores for the interview videos shown at this event. For the opening gala of the "Play Me, I'm Yours" event, which has been known worldwide for years, which will take place at the end of February / March 2016 and a. took place in Mesa, Arizona, she orchestrated "The Bravest Journey" for 25 pianos.

On January 27, 2017 Bear released a new jazz EP Into the Blue with New York studio recordings (September 2015) of their jazz trio (Peter Slavov, Mark McLean). The EP, which she dedicated to Quincy Jones, contains 5 of her own songs as well as her arrangement of Richard Rodgers' song My Favorite Things . In the first week after its release, the EP reached number 7 on the Billboard Album Jazz Charts. and received very good reviews.

As one of ten winners of the Ascap Morton Gould Young Composers Award, Bear was commissioned to compose choral music. Her chorale "We have a dream", which was inspired by Martin Luther King's I have a dream speech , was performed in a concert at St. Ignatius of Antioch Church in New York on May 20, 2017.

After playing the piano in early November at the Hollywood Bowl for the 1947 Oscar-winning Tom & Jerry cartoon "The Cat Concerto" Tom gives a concert , she performed in November and December 2017 as the youngest musical act in the history of Night of the Proms in 25 concerts in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg. Bear opened each concert on a piano in the midst of the audience with the epilogue to La La Land . Later she performed her arrangements of Skyfall and Gnarls Barkley's song "Crazy" together with the orchestra and choir - with a piano in an LED cube floating above the stage and the audience . Then she spontaneously set a story of a spectator to music at the piano in each concert before she concluded this part of the concert with the orchestra with the "Bumble Bear Boogie". In the second part she began a duet with John Miles with the second movement from the 2nd piano concerto (Rachmaninow) , which went into a joint performance of the Eric Carmen song "All by myself". Then she played the intro to the John Miles Song Music and accompanied Roger Hodgson on his song "School".

On May 5, 2018, Bear was honored with the highest civilian honor in the state of Illinois, the "Order of Lincoln" - as the youngest recipient in history. As part of the award ceremony, a piano / orchestral work "And Forever Free" composed by her for this event was performed as a world premiere. The words of the title are found at a crucial point in Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation . On May 7, 2018, the Chicago TV station WGN released another update of its 2008 documentary about Emily Bear under the title "Emily Bear goes from piano prodigy to pop singer" after receiving an Emmy award in 2013. This shows her way into the field of pop music and her beginnings as a singer in this genre. In cooperation with the Los Angeles-based producer Toby Gad , Bear produced several songs that are due to be released soon and her first music video for the song "Fomo" (Fear of missing out), which she only released as a lyric video in New Year 2020.

Bear performed again at the Hollywood Bowl on May 25th and 26th, 2018. This time she opens a Disney Live performance of Beauty and the Beast (1991) . She plays live with orchestra in sync with the Disney "Bumble Boogie" cartoon, which was part of the 1948 Disney cartoon Music, Dance and Rhythm .

In June 2018, Bear was awarded the Abe Olman Scholarship from the Songwriters Hall of Fame , along with four other musicians . On July 4th, 2018, on Independence Day (United States) , she performed at the Grant Park Music Festival with the Grant Park Orchestra under the direction of Christopher Bell in the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park in Chicago during the Independence Day Salute Concert with Rhapsody in blue.

After Bear had two concerts in 2019 with the World Doctors Orchestra founded by Stefan Willich in Israel for the benefit of the Save a child's heart Foundation (her third commitment for this organization after January and November 2017) and a performance in Carnegie Hall began her official work in the field of film music by writing the main title song "More than just a girl" and the end title song "Daylight" for the remake of the Carolyn Keene book " Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase", which was commissioned by Warner Bros. Entertainment u. a. Produced , written, and recorded by Ellen DeGeneres and filmed, written, and recorded by Katt Shea . She was also the singer on both songs.

She played the piano solos in Mark Isham's score for “A Dog's Journey,” which will be released in mid-May and produced by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment company . On May 26th, one year after the WGN Feature Bears, the first single in the field of pop music was released with the title “I'm not alone” with the announcement of an upcoming album “Emotions”.

After more than nine years, Emily Bear returned to the Ellen Show in June 2019, alongside Harrison Ford and Dr. Ruth Westheimer . In addition to an interview, she performed with her song 'Dancin'.

On September 6, 2019, Bear released the next song, "Emotions". The official video for the song was released on September 13th. On October 18th, Bear finally released their pop debut EP "Emotions", which consists of six songs. The song "Weak" was created in collaboration with the German musician and producer Nicolas Rebscher . On November 22nd, Bear released a music video for the song 'Dancin'.

She released another song "Just Leave" on April 17, 2020. For a dance video that was developed by Broadway dancers during the Corona Lockdown, she arranged the song "Don'tcha wanna dance". The arrangement consists of the Kacey Musgraves song "Rainbow" and the Whitney Houston song "I wanna dance with somebody". Bear was also involved in the video as a pianist and singer.
