Friends of Animals (FoA) is an animal rights organization based in Darien, Connecticut, United States. It was founded by Alice Herrington in Manhattan , New York in 1957 with the aim of reducing the number of stray cats and dogs by offering inexpensive castration and sterilization. The conservation and protection of wild animals was added later. Campaigns for animal rights are also carried out.

Gary L. Francione writes that Herrington was one of the earliest members of the animal rights movement to recognize the difference between animal rights and animal welfare. Herrington retired from FoA in 1986.

In 1981, the FoA propagated the Research Modernization Act in Congress, which aims to develop alternatives to animal testing in research.

The association campaigned against the hunt for the saber antelopes , which had been kept in large numbers on Texan hunting farms since the 1990s. They won a legal battle against the American Conservation Agency , which had issued an exemption for hunting the protected antelopes. As a result, hunting for the oryx in Texas became more difficult from April 2012. As a result, numerous farms reduced their oryx stocks. In January 2014 the American congress removed the saber antelope from the "endangered species list". This made it easier to hunt the antelope in the USA.

criticism

Critics accuse the association that they would rather risk the species becoming extinct than allow the animals to be hunted.
