Napanee is a city in eastern Ontario , Canada , with a population of 15,511 people (2011). The official name of the city is "Greater Napanee". Napanee is located between two larger cities: Napanee is about 35 km east of Belleville and about 35 km west of Kingston .

history

The city was founded by English loyalists in the late 18th century and didn't join Canada until 1854. Sir John Macdonald , the first Prime Minister of Canada, was a lawyer in Napanee. The singer Avril Lavigne grew up here and this is where her musical path began.

Population development

In 2001 the city had 15,132 inhabitants. In 2006 the number rose by 1.8% to 15,400. 94.8% of the population speak English, only 1.8% name French as their first language. The remaining 3.4% say that neither English nor French is their first language.

Economy and Infrastructure

The largest employer in town is a Goodyear factory . The restaurant chain Dixie Lee Fried Chicken is headquartered in the city. In addition, many medium-sized companies have their headquarters in Napanee. Furthermore, many residents are employed in the neighboring larger cities.

Shopping

There are several boutiques and restaurants in the city center where you can go shopping. Larger retail stores such as Giant Tiger, Walmart , Canadian Tire , and Home Hardware are in town.

Napanee has two weekly newspapers. These include the Napanee Guide and the Napanee Beaver . Both newspapers appear every Thursday. Basically, Napanee is supplied with television and radio by the larger neighboring cities of Kingston and Belleville . Since 2007 the company MBC Corporate has been operating its first local radio station MyFM Greater Napanee 88.7 FM and broadcasting adult contemporary music . A local television station is Deseronto's CJOH-TV-6 . The city is also used by the larger television companies such as u. a. CBC and CTV served by satellite and the cable network.

Transport links

The Macdonald-Cartier Highway 401 begins about eight miles from the Detroit River on the outskirts of Windsor and connects the cities of Toronto, Trenton, Belleville, Napanee, Kingston, Cornwall to Montreal. In addition, several country roads lead through Napanee including Country Road 2 through several smaller towns. The VIA Rail Canada combines Napanee several times a day with Toronto , Ottawa and Montreal . The station is at 301 John Street.
