Louis Boileau-Domingue (born March 6, 1992 in Saint-Hyacinthe , Québec ) is a Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League (NHL) since February 2020 and also for their farm team , the Utica Comets , in the American Hockey League (AHL) is used.

Career

youth

Louis Domingue was born in Saint-Hyacinthe and grew up in Mont-Saint-Hilaire , a suburb of Montréal , a few kilometers away . In his youth he played for the Lac St-Louis Lions , staying with the family of his teammate Louis Leblanc . In 2008, the Moncton Wildcats selected him in the entry draft of the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ) in 13th position, for which Domingue played in the episode with the beginning of the 2008/09 season. As a rookie , he acted as the second goalkeeper behind Nicola Riopel and came to twelve appearances over the course of the season, while he took part in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2009 over the turn of the year, where he finished fifth with the Canada Québec team .

Domingue in the Remparts jersey (2012)

In the following season 2009/10 Domingue received significantly more time in Moncton, but was given in January 2010 by the Wildcats including Matt Brown to the Remparts de Québec , which in turn transferred Kelsey Tessier to Moncton. In the city of Québec , Domingue became a regular goalkeeper, took part in the CHL Top Prospects Game a little later and was finally selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2010 in 138th position by the Phoenix Coyotes . For the time being, the Canadian stayed in the LHJMQ for two more years and increased his personal statistics significantly, leading the league in the 2011/12 season with a catch rate of 91.4%.

NHL and AHL

In the summer of 2012, Domingue switched to the Phoenix Coyote system and spent almost the entire 2012/13 season with the Gwinnett Gladiators in the third-rate ECHL ; only in February 2013 he came on two missions with the other farm team of the Coyotes, the Portland Pirates from the second-rate American Hockey League (AHL). This situation was reversed in the following year when he booked 36 AHL and only 7 ECHL missions. It was similar in the 2014/15 season, but in January 2015 he made his debut in the National Hockey League with the now renamed Arizona Coyotes . In total, he came to seven missions, a catch rate of 91.1% and an average goal conceded of 2.73. In May 2015, the goalkeeper extended his contract in Arizona for one year.

The 2015/16 season began Domingue with the Coyotes' new AHL farm team, the Springfield Falcons , but was recalled to the NHL squad in December 2015 due to an injury to Mike Smith . Since Smith was out longer, Domingue formed the goalkeeper duo of the Coyotes together with Anders Lindbäck and was regularly used in the NHL. In January 2016, he recorded six wins in eleven games as well as a catch rate of 92.5% and an average goal against 2.20 and was consequently named NHL Rookie of the Month .

Nevertheless, Domingue never really convinced with his performances in Arizona and lost his regular place after the start of the 2017/18 season to Antti Raanta and Scott Wedgewood . As a result, the Coyotes gave it to the Tampa Bay Lightning in November 2017 and received Michael Leighton and Tye McGinn in return . There he managed to establish himself as the second goalkeeper behind Andrei Wassilewski and in doing so prevailed against Peter Budaj , so that he signed a new two-year contract in Tampa in June 2018. By signing Curtis McElhinney in the summer of 2019, the Lightning transferred the goalkeeper back to the AHL at the beginning of the 2019/20 season, whereupon he in November 2019 in exchange for a conditional seven-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2021 to the New Jersey Devils was delivered. He was only active there for a few months before he was transferred to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Zane McIntyre for the trade deadline in February 2020 .
