Pesquera de Ebro is a village with about 20 to 30 inhabitants in the municipality of Valle de Sedano in the Spanish province of Burgos in the autonomous community of Castile and León . Due to its location and its medieval appearance, the place was recognized in 1993 as a cultural asset ( Bien de Interés Cultural ) in the category Conjunto histórico-artístico .

location

The place Pesquera de Ebro is located at an altitude of about 640 m above sea level. d. M. in a valley on the upper reaches of the river Ebro about 68 km (driving distance) north of Burgos near the border with the Cantabria region . The distance to Sedano , the main town of the municipality, is approx. 28 km.

Population development

In the middle of the 19th century the place still had about 100 inhabitants.

economy

The residents of the village lived for centuries as a self-sufficient living from agriculture, which also included a little viticulture and cattle breeding, and from fishing ( pesca ). In the meantime, tourism has become an important source of income in the form of renting out holiday apartments ( casas rurales ).

history

The first mention of Pesquera de Ebro can be found in a document from 941; there is already talk of a bridge there. The town flourished in the 17th and 18th centuries. Already in the 18th century the place belonged to the administrative unit 'Valle de Sedano', which however disappeared again in the 19th century. In the 1970s, Pesquera de Ebro was again incorporated into the reborn municipality.

  • The place impresses with its winding streets and its location in the valley of the Ebro. Several fields spread out along the shore zone.
  • The bridge, which was repeatedly repaired in the Middle Ages and modern times, is still in operation today.
  • The small parish church of San Sebastián is built from roughly hewn rubble stones . A three-part bell gable ( espadaña ) rises above the renaissance portal with a triangular gable made of precisely hewn stone material . The altarpiece from the church is now in the Museo del Retablo in Burgos.
  • A baroque calvary cross stands on a stepped square base in front of the church .
  • In the village there are several buildings with stone heraldic shields from the 17th and 18th centuries.
