Johann Leopold Ludwig Schoch

Johann Leopold Ludwig Schoch (born December 6, 1728 in Dessau , † July 11, 1793 in Wörlitz near Dessau) was a German court gardener , garden director and horticultural artist. Together with Leopold III. Friedrich Franz von Anhalt-Dessau designed large parts of the Wörlitz Park .

Schoch initially worked in Großkühnau . Around 1764 he was involved in the work on the Elbaue in Wörlitz. With the design of the Elbaue he continued the suggestions of his sovereign Leopold III. In addition to the work on Wörlitzer Park, in which Johann Friedrich Eyserbeck and Erdmannsdorff were also involved, which also contains an area named after him, Schoch's Garden , he also worked in Neumark's garden and in the palace garden. But he paid special attention to the extensive tree nurseries that were required for the creation of the landscape park.

From 1765 onwards Schoch lived in a small building that was surrounded by a wall; it was the predecessor of the Gothic House . His house was enlarged several times between 1773 and 1813; these extensions were made at the request of Leopold III. carried out. As a planner and horticultural artist, he had to plan the effects of his facilities and changes in advance; he is one of the first Germans to bring the ideas of the Enlightenment to effect in nature.

Johann Leopold Ludwig Schoch also designed a landscape park in Halle, which later became the Halle Zoological Garden .

Schoch was born the son of the gardener Johann George Schoch, who later became the pleasure gardener of Prince Dietrich von Anhalt-Dessau . His mother was Johanna Sophie Closer. Schoch married Katharina Maria Adler, and later Johanna Sophie Schoch; Schoch fathered a total of ten children, four of whom were sons. This included Johann George Gottlieb Schoch , who continued his father's work at Wörlitzer Park.
