Großkühnau is a town in Dessau-Roßlau , an independent city in the state of Saxony-Anhalt . It's about five kilometers northwest of the city center.
history
As early as 945, Kühnau was first mentioned in a deed of gift from King Otto I as Qiuna . Kühnau Castle was built around 950. The Kühnau village church, which was probably built around the year 1000, was first mentioned in 1147; it existed until it was demolished in 1828. Between 1150 and 1500, Benedictine monks belonging to the Nienburg monastery were the spiritual masters in Kühnau. Kühnau Castle became a Freihof with agriculture and forestry around 1200 until it was destroyed by a flood of the Elbe around 1300. The village was preserved on the edge of today's Kühnauer See. While in 1345 Kühnau was shown in the property lists as property of the Nienburg monastery, in 1512 the abbot Heinrich von Dunkelberg ceded the monastery property in Dessau to Prince Ernst von Anhalt . Kühnau thus became a princely village. With the arrival of the Reformation in Dessau in 1534, the Kühnau residents also became Lutheran, and the first Protestant church in the village was built in 1585/86. The Elbe floods in 1845 did not spare Kühnau either, the whole village was under water after the dike broke. In 1900 there were 1168 residents in Kühnau.
After the formation of the village of Kleinkühnau around 1700, the name Großkühnau prevailed for the existing Kühnau. Großkühnau was incorporated into Dessau on October 1, 1923 .
In 1931 Johannes Winkler experimented with liquid rockets on the parade ground near Dessau-Großkühnau . He managed the first European launch of such a rocket on February 21, 1931.
The area of Großkühnau extends directly to the Elbe in the north , here there are forest and meadow areas of the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve and the Saalberghau nature reserve .
The connection to the other Dessau-Roßlauer districts is made by bus lines 12 and 17 of the Dessauer Verkehrsgesellschaft .
