Prince Albert Friedrich von Anhalt-Dessau (1750–1811), a son of Leopold II , had the palace redesigned in 1780 with portal designs, the staircase and the garden room, in part in a classical style. Only the ballroom on the first floor was decorated with decorative paintings based on designs by Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff . The garden was designed from 1753 to 1764 by Johann Leopold Ludwig Schoch .
The castle had been used as a school for the Reich Labor Service (RAD) since August 20, 1932. Since January 1998 the castle has been the headquarters of the Dessau-Wörlitz Cultural Foundation.
