The Yesa dam (Spanish: Embalse de Yesa) dams the Aragón River in the Spanish Pre-Pyrenees to form a 2089 hectare lake when it is fully blocked .
The 74 m high gravity dam, completed in 1959, is located two kilometers east of the town of Yesa on the border of the autonomous communities of Navarre and Aragon . The 18 km long reservoir with a maximum storage volume of 450 million m³ extends east of the dam in the north of the Aragonese province of Saragossa .
The dam is fed by the Aragón and several tributaries, including the Esca , which flows in from the north . The mean inflow is 44.7 m³ per second or 1,322 hm³ per year. The storage space is filled up mainly in the months of October to May, whereby the dam is used for flood protection, while in the arid months of June to September water can be released to irrigate the agricultural areas. There is a hydroelectric power station on the dam .
In August 2006 there was a landslide on the left side of the valley. The earth masses did not pour into the lake, but onto an as yet unfilled territory that was planned to expand the lake. This prevented a flood wave and a catastrophe for the residents in the area. The accident was kept secret for eight months.
With the neighboring dam project in Itoiz, a similar scenario threatens upon completion, in which case the water masses would pour directly into the neighboring villages.
