As a result of the mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the resulting lower demand for labor in rural areas, the number of inhabitants has decreased significantly since the beginning of the 20th century. The almost abandoned hamlet (pedanía) of San Felices also belongs to the municipality .

economy

For centuries, the town's residents were essentially self-sufficient ; There were no grocery stores or markets. Even the few traders, craftsmen and service providers essentially provided themselves with everything they needed for life. The situation only improved with the improvement of the infrastructure in the second half of the 20th century.

history

Celtic, Roman, Visigoth and even Moorish traces of settlement have not yet been discovered. Agüero is first mentioned in 938. Since 1024 Agüero was a fortified border town to the Arab dominions of Huesca and Barbastro and an outpost of the Reconquista . At the beginning of the 12th century, Berta, the widow of Peter I of Aragón († 1104), ruled from Agüero over the tiny Reino de los Mallos .

  • Hardly anything has survived from the fortress (castillo) that was formerly hidden in the rocks of the Mallos .
  • The Romanesque-Gothic parish church of San Salvador was built in the 12th and 13th centuries. Built in the 17th century; the Romanesque western part, including the richly decorated entrance portal, which is raised by archivolts and whose tympanum shows Christ in a mandorla surrounded by the four evangelist symbols, is significantly lower than the unadorned Gothic nave . The five-storey bell tower (campanar) ending in a dome dominates the church and the entire townscape. The apse of the church hides a late baroque altar retable (retablo) in the style of Churriguerism, richly decorated with figures, carved and gilded .
  • An organ museum is located in the Casa Abadia .
Surroundings
  • The three apsidial Romanesque church of Santiago stands in a wooded area about one kilometer east of the village. The entire church is built from precisely hewn stones. The deeply staggered column portal is located on the south side and bears rich sculptural decoration in the tympanum ( Adoration of the Kings ) and on the capitals - here there are both human and animal scenes.
  • In the wider area there are abstract prehistoric rock paintings that are dated to the Bronze Age .
