Binéfar is a municipality in the west of the Huesca province of the autonomous community of Aragon in Spain . Together with Tamarite de Litera, it is the capital of the Comarca La Litera . The community has 9561 inhabitants on an area of ​​25 km² (as of January 1, 2019) and is 286 meters above sea level.

Binéfar is located between Monzón and Almacelles on the N-240 national road and is therefore on the approach from Catalonia to the provincial capital Huesca .

The name Binéfars could be of Arabic origin and go back to a gentleman named Affa or Effar. This theory was advocated at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries by the local linguist Benito Coll . According to this, Binéfar was derived from Ben-Affa (sons of Affa) and over time has been transformed into Abinefar, Avenafar, Benafar or Binafar. It was known by this name in Monzón in the 10th century.
