The increasing mechanization of agriculture led to a continuous loss of jobs in the second half of the 20th century, but this was more than compensated for by incorporation and the growing tourism sector.
economy
In the past, the inhabitants of the place lived directly or indirectly (as farmers, land or transport workers, traders or craftsmen) from agriculture. Since the 1960s, tourism has played an increasingly important role in the municipality's economic life.
history
Celtic , Roman and Visigoth traces have not yet been discovered in the region and so it can be assumed that the place was created in late antiquity or in the early Middle Ages as a resting place or as a stopover for shepherds and their flocks as well as for traders and their goods.
Attractions
- The landscape of the village and its surroundings, surrounded by mountains, is one of the most beautiful in Spain.
- A reservoir (Embalse de Lanuza) is located immediately south of the village and contributes to its attractive overall appearance.
- In the village itself there are numerous old and new houses with external walls made of quarry stone.
- From a cultural point of view, a single arched late medieval bridge (Puente del Paco) over the Río Gállego is worth mentioning.
- The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Assunción was built in the late Gothic style on the site of a medieval Romanesque church between 1525 and 1538 . The yokes of the nave (nature) are of star vaults spans; that of the apse with its gilded hanging keystones stands out from an artistic point of view. There are also three altar retables (retablos) : The main altar dates from 1537 and shows Renaissance forms and panel paintings, the two sides have blown gables with decorative obelisks and show the typical columns of late baroque Churriguerism, rotated around an inner axis .
- Formigal
- The small local church in the neighboring village of Formigal stands in the middle of a newly built area made up of holiday apartments and hotels; it dates from the 10th century (restored in 1972) and still shows Mozarabic style elements.
