  • January 21 : The first of a series of letters from Junius appears in London in the Public Advertiser magazine . The king, minister, parliament, courts of justice and civil servants, as well as the machinations of the Whigs and Tories and their struggles among themselves, are denounced with ruthless satire , but at the same time with spirit, thorough knowledge and eloquence. The identity of the author “Junius” remains undiscovered.

Pope Clement XIV.
  • September 12 : With his first encyclical Decet quam maxime , the new Pope Clement XIV , elected in May, addresses the bishops of the Kingdom of Sardinia. In it he denounced the increasing abuse of taxes and duties paid to the bishops.
  • December 12th : Pope Clement XIV publishes the encyclical Cum summi apostolatus , with which he takes up the tradition of the Holy Year . On the same date he also published the closely related encyclical Inscrutabili divinae sapientiae , with which he referred to the need for a jubilee year .
