Ivan Kotlyarevskyj is considered a pioneer of the Ukrainian literary written language . He transferred classics such as Virgil's Aeneid in a burlesque way into the language of the Ukrainian people of the time, for example by having Greek gods appear as Cossacks . In 1842 a complete work of his works was published for the first time in Kharkov . Kotljarewskyj's first version of the Aeneid ( Saint Petersburg , 1798) was one of the most popular writings of Emperor Nicholas I , who characterized this script as a "clever trick" ( umnaja schalost ' ).

Kotljarewskyj took part in the Russo-Turkish War from 1806-1812 .
