- February 27th : The Irish-English author Laurence Sterne publishes the novel A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy ( Yorick's sensitive journey through France and Italy ). The novel remains unfinished as the author dies a few days after the first chapters are published before he can finish his novel.
- James Boswell publishes An Account of Corsica , which he visited on his Grand Tour .

- Christoph Martin Wieland publishes the philosophical verse story Musarion .

- After Johann Wolfgang Goethe and Käthchen Schönkopf separated by mutual agreement in the spring after a two-year relationship, Goethe wrote the shepherd's play Die Laune des Verliebten . In July, Goethe fell seriously ill, whereupon he broke off his studies in Leipzig and returned to his parents' house in Frankfurt in August, where he was intensely concerned with religion and mysticism under the influence of Moravian canon Susanne von Klettenberg , a friend of his mother's. In November he begins work on his first comedy The Accomplices .
- The tragedy Ugolino , main work by Heinrich Wilhelm von Gerstenberg , is published anonymously. The world premiere takes place a year later.

- The German archaeologist and art writer Johann Joachim Winckelmann , who lives in Rome, embarks on a journey together with the sculptor Bartolomeo Cavaceppi that will lead him to old and new friends in his homeland. An illness and the troubles of the trip lead to a melancholy attack, which already lets him break off the trip in Regensburg. On the way back he visits Vienna and is received by Empress Maria Theresia . He received four gold and silver medals from her for his scientific merits. After another fever, he continues his return journey. In Trieste he stops at the Hotel Locanda Grande , where he meets the convicted chef Francesco Arcangeli . On the morning of June 8th, Arcangeli tries to strangle Winckelmann with a rope and steal the coins. When this fails, he stabs him with a knife. Winckelmann bleeds to death six hours after the attack, but can still provide extensive information on what happened. Arcangeli is sentenced to death on wheels after being proven to have murdered him.
- December 6th : William Smellie publishes the first batch of the first edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica in Edinburgh . From now on, weekly deliveries of this Scottish reconnaissance product will appear .
- The John Murray publishing bookstore is founded in London .
- Denis Diderot and Louis de Jaucourt publish the fifth volume of the Encyclopédie .
