- April 15 : Samuel Johnson publishes the first issue of his magazine The Idler .
- April 24 : Robert Dodsley and his brother sign a contract with Edmund Burke to publish The Annual Register .
- Denis Diderot wrote the drama Le Père de famille ( The housefather ) and the theoretical work Discours sur la poésie dramatique ( Treatise on dramatic poetry )
- The French economist François Quesnay founded the physiocracy with his first economic cycle model, Tableau économique .
- The Dictionary of the English Language by Samuel Johnson is now in its sixth edition in just three years.
- In the 10th edition of his work Systema Naturae , Carl von Linné introduces the two-part naming scheme for animals as well, thus establishing the modern zoological nomenclature together with Carl Alexander Clerck .
- The French writer Jean-François Marmontel entered the service of Madame de Pompadour and, thanks to her temporary favor, acquired the “Mercure” privileges in 1758, which he lost again due to a satire against the Duke of Aumont.
- English writer Anna Laetitia Barbauld and her family move to Warrington, Cheshire .
- The French mathematician, astronomer and philosopher Pierre Louis Maupertuis moves to his last hometown, Basel .
