The old church is the ruin of the former Roman Catholic parish church in Menden , a district of Sankt Augustin ( Rhein-Sieg district ) in North Rhine-Westphalia . It is located in a park north of the street An der Alten Kirche .

history

When the Siegburg Abbey was founded, Archbishop Anno II gave the new monastery a third of the Augustinian Church in Menden in 1064. Around 1300 the church was mentioned in the liber valoris .

The Romanesque Augustine Church, which was preserved until the 19th century, dates from the 12th century. It was a two-aisled church with a four- story choir tower in front of the main nave in the east . The church thus corresponded to the type of choir tower complex, which was not unusual for the region, which had arisen above all in the vicinity of the parish churches incorporated into the Cassius monastery and the Vilich monastery.

Around 1800 the church lost its typical easting when the apse on the choir tower was removed and a new choir was added to the main nave in the west. In addition, two arcade pillars to the side aisle were removed. In 1872 the Romanesque tower was demolished except for the tower hall due to its disrepair. After the larger neo-Romanesque St. Augustine's Church was built, the old church was finally completely closed in 1896. The old church has been made recognizable by building up the foundation walls.
