Henry Home Kames, Lord Kames

Henry Home Kames, Lord Kames (* 1696 at Kames House , Berwickshire ; † December 27, 1782 ) was a Scottish lawyer and philosopher .

Kames was admitted to court in 1724. In 1752 he was appointed judge of the Scottish Civil Court ( Court of Session ) and received the title of Lord Kames . In 1763 he became Lord Commissioner of Justiciary for Scotland ( Lord of Justiciary ).

He was best known for his work "Principles of Criticism " ( Elements of Criticism ). The Sketches of the History of Man (1774) were of decisive importance for Herder's philosophy of history ("Also a philosophy of history for the formation of mankind", 1774).
