Kames House

Kames House , formerly Besborough , is a villa near the Scottish village of Leitholm in the Council Area Scottish Borders . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. Furthermore, it forms a category B monument ensemble together with various external buildings.

Henry Home, Lord Kames

The villa was built during the 17th century. The lawyer and philosopher Henry Home, Lord Kames was born there in 1696. Kames lived in the house and wrote some of his most important works there. When Captain Riddel lived in Kames House between 1783 and 1825, he named the villa Besborough after the ship he commanded . In the early 20th century, Kames House was redesigned. The Scottish architect Harry Ramsay Taylor was hired for this.

Kames House is isolated around 1.5 km north of Leitholm. Originally, the two-story villa had an almost U-shaped floor plan. The south-east exposed front is nine axes wide, with the middle part being set back (Scheme 2–5–2). On the right above the two-winged entrance portal there is a coat of arms plaque. The protruding parts of the building are designed with colossal pilasters and stepped gables . Various tourelles protrude from the facades . The slate roof is designed with hatchings with curved roofs. The facades of Kames House are plastered with Harl . Corner stones and natural stone details are contrasted in color .
