- With the novel The Castle of Otranto, A Story. Translated by William Marshal, Gent. From the Original Italian of Onuphrio Muralto, Canon of the Church of St. Nicholas at Otranto ( The Castle of Otranto ), the British politician and writer Horace Walpole founded the genre of the horror novel .
- Marie Jeanne Riccoboni's Historie de Miss Jenny is printed in Paris by Brocas & Humblot.
- John Cleland publishes The Surprises of Love , four romantic short stories.
- Christoph Martin Wieland writes the novel Don Silvio von Rosalva, or the victory of nature over enthusiasm .

philosophy
- The Milanese lawyer and legal philosopher Cesare Beccaria publishes his most famous work Dei delitti e delle pene ( On crimes and punishments ). In this work, which is shaped by the ideas of the Enlightenment and utilitarian ethics, he advocates the thesis that the state should only impose the level of punishment that is necessary to maintain order. The principle of proportionality should be observed when determining the sentence . It is not the severity of the punishment that is decisive, but the consistent application of the criminal laws. Beccaria rejects torture and the death penalty . The book will be translated into several languages.
- Voltaire publishes his philosophical dictionary Dictionnaire philosophique in Geneva anonymously with Gabriel Grasset. The first edition with the title Dictionnaire philosophique portatif with 73 headwords was expanded by Voltaire in 1765, 1767 and 1769 by two volumes with 120 headwords. The book, a declaration of war against the Christian religion and the Catholic Church, was burned in Geneva in the same year and on March 19, 1765 in Paris.
- Thomas Reid is the author of the philosophical work An Inquiry Into the Human Mind on the Principles of Common Sense at the University of Aberdeen .
Natural sciences
- Otto Friedrich Müller publishes the work Fauna Insectorum Fridrichsdalina , which among other things contains the first description of the early reed hunter , in which, however, he describes the male and the female as different species.
- The Danish zoologist Morten Thrane Brünnich publishes the work Ornithologia borealis , which contains Scandinavian birds, which are described here for the first time. In the same year he also published the Entomologia .

- February 27 : Pope Clement XIII. prohibits reading the book De statu ecclesiae et legitima potestate Romani pontificis liber singularis , published under the pseudonym Justinus Febronius the year before, and puts it on the index Librorum Prohibitorum . The spread of the thoughts of Febronianism through multiple reprints does not stop that. The Auxiliary Bishop of Trier, Johann Nikolaus von Hontheim , was revoked years later after his exposure as an author.

- Several north German booksellers under the leadership of Leipzig's Philipp Erasmus Reich decide to stay away from the Catholic-dominated Frankfurt Book Fair in future and only present their newcomers at the Leipzig Book Fair .
