The former slaughterhouse

The slaughterhouse in Baden was a slaughterhouse founded in 1933 in the city of Baden in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It was located on the Schwimmbadstrasse in Wettingen and ceased operations in 1988. The building of the former slaughterhouse is under cantonal protection .

history

In 1930 an architecture competition was announced to which seven architects from Baden were invited. First prize went to Hans Loepfe , who was then commissioned to build the slaughterhouse. In 1933 the slaughterhouse started operations. Various extensions were made between 1957 and 1972, such as those of the bays in the northeast (1957), emergency slaughterhouses and cold storage rooms (1969) and the large cattle slaughterhouse in the northwest. The grooved windows were removed in 1972. The slaughterhouse was closed in 1988 for economic reasons. Today the building is used by businesses.

building

The former slaughterhouse consists of a three-part main building with a raised central hall. The traffic hall was located there, while the two side halls were used for slaughtering and the cooling, machinery and administration rooms were also housed there. This main building was bricked with exposed bricks and provided with large windows and glass blocks. Parallel to the main building there was an auxiliary building, also made of exposed brick, in which the stables were housed. The slaughterhouse had direct access via ramps to the tracks that were used to deliver the cattle at Wettingen station .
