Morten Thrane Brünnich
Morten Thrane Brünnich (born September 30, 1737 in Copenhagen , † September 19, 1827 there ) was a Danish zoologist and mineralogist .
Live and act
Brünnich was born in Copenhagen as the son of a painter . He studied oriental languages and theology , but soon he became interested in natural history . To Erik Ludvigsen Pontoppidan's work Den Danske Atlas eller Konge-Riget Dannemark (1763–81) he contributed his observations on insects. When he took over the collection of the judge Christian Fleischer , he became very interested in ornithology , and in 1764 he published the work Ornithologia borealis , which included Scandinavian birds, which were described here for the first time.
Brünnich published the Entomologia in 1764 . Then he went on a long sea voyage around Europe to the Mediterranean , during which he studied the fish, which he consequently mentioned in his work Ichthyologia Massiliensis in 1768.
After his return he took over a professorship for natural history and economics at the University of Copenhagen in 1769 . Here he founded a museum for natural history and wrote a book for his students: Zoologiae fundamenta praelectionibus academicis accommodata. In 1769 he also became a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences .
