Johann Gottfried Pilarik (born April 3, 1705 in Wittenberg ; † May 1, 1764 in Großenhain ) was a German superintendent and hymn poet.

life and work

Johann Gottfried Pilarik's family originally came from Hungary . His grandfather Stephan Pilarick (1615–1693) was a cantor , then a preacher in Hungary, from where he was expelled, then the first pastor of the exiles' church in Neusalza-Spremberg , which was consecrated on February 4, 1679 after four years of construction. His son Jeremias (1646-1720) had been a teacher at the school in Wittenberg since 1677 and married Maria Mettig. Johann Gottfried Pilarik comes from this relationship.

In addition to private lessons from his father, the boy first attended school in Wittenberg, then from 1718 the school in Magdeburg and studied at the University of Wittenberg , where he received his master's degree in philosophy in 1726. Then he was Vice President at the Lyceum in Lübben . In 1728 a collection of poems appeared in three volumes, each with around 150 songs, which is regarded as his main work. In 1729 he was promoted to assistant preacher and catechist of the Church of the Holy Spirit and in 1731 to the rectorate of the Lyceum. In the following year he left the city and became fourth deacon in Wittenberge. In 1738 he moved to Liebenwerda as pastor and superintendent , and in 1739 in the same position to Großenhain , where he worked until his death.

His son Gotthilf Pilarik (* 1732 in Lübben; † 1803) became a deacon in Liebenwerda in 1754.
