- Beginning of the year: The French enlightener and encyclopaedist Paul Henri Thiry d'Holbach published the philosophical work Système de la Nature ou Des Loix du Monde Physique et du Monde Moral ( System of Nature or of the Laws of the.) With Marc-Michel Rey in the Netherlands Physical and Moral World ). The title page names Jean-Baptiste de Mirabaud , who died ten years ago , a member of the Académie française, and the place of publication is London .
- Fortunato Bartolomeo De Felice begins publishing the Encyclopédie d'Yverdon in French in Yverdon-les-Bains , Switzerland . It is an important follow-up to the Encyclopédie by Denis Diderot and Jean Baptiste le Rond d'Alembert . In contrast to other subsequent works of the Paris Encyclopedia , the Encyclopédie d'Yverdon is not a reprint or pirated edition, but a real new version. Felice had the text corpus edited by 34 authors, 27 of whom are known by name. They improve incorrect articles, complete incomplete articles and add numerous new articles.
