Mary Vieira

Mary Vieira (born 1927 in Minas Gerais , Brazil ; died 2001 in Basel ) was a Brazilian artist and graphic designer .

Live and act

Mary Viera first studied education, then art, with a focus on sculpture with Alberto da Veiga Guignard in Belo Horizonte . In 1947 she exhibited in the Belo Horizonte Community of Brazilian Young Artists .

In 1951 she moved to Europe and took part in the last exhibition of the Swiss group allianz at the invitation of Max Bill .

In Europe she developed dynamically formed sculptures and dealt intensively with the topics of space and movement. The artist is considered to be one of the most important representatives of kinetic art . From 1966 to 1993 she taught interior design at the Kunstgewerbeschule Basel .

Vieira also gained fame as a graphic designer. Although Vieira designed only a few posters, these are regularly printed in historical overviews of the history of graphic design and are referred to as "a limited but important contribution to Swiss graphics".

Works

Her works are part of the collection of the Museum of Modern Art , New York, the Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe , the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich and the Daimler Art Collection, are exhibited worldwide and are often installed in public spaces, for example in Basel University Library , the Seefeldquai Park in Zurich or the Ibirapuera Park in São Paulo .

Awards

In 1953, Vieira received the prize of the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro in the category "Brazilian Sculpture" at the 2nd São Paulo Biennale .

In 1966 she received the "International Marinetti Award for Plastic Research on Kinevisual Expression" on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Salons des Réalités Nouvelles .
