Theodor Heinsius

Otto Friedrich Theodor Heinsius (born September 6, 1770 in Tschernow in the Neumark , † May 19, 1849 in Berlin ) was a German educator , grammarian and lexicographer .

Life

Theodor Heinsius was the son of a superintendent who accompanied Frederick the Great during the Seven Years' War and worked in Königsberg in the Neumark. From 1788 to 1790 he attended the Joachimsthal Gymnasium in Berlin. Heinsius studied theology , philology and education at the University of Halle from 1790 to 1793 . He received his doctorate as Dr. phil. Since February 3, 1794 he was an associate teacher at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Gymnasium in Berlin. From April 4, 1801 to 1847 he was professor and rector at the Berlinisches Gymnasium zum Grauen Kloster and from 1803 head of a secondary school for girls in Berlin.

Together with Johann August Zeune and Friedrich Ludwig Jahn , he founded the Berlin Society for the German Language in 1814 . Numerous letters from Heinsius to the grammar school director Johann Joachim Bellermann have survived. On May 31, 1833, he was a participant in the "Feast for Tiecks sixtieth birthday".

Max Stirner turned against his conception of education in 1842 in his newspaper article: The untrue principle of our education .

In Berlin he was a member of the Masonic Lodge "Pythagoras zum Flammenden Stern". His grave is located in the St. Marien and St. Nikolai Cemetery I in the Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg .

Honors

  • He was an honorary member of the German Society in Leipzig .
  • On the occasion of his 50th anniversary of service on February 3, 1845, he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 3rd Class with Ribbon .
