Encyclopédie d'Yverdon
The Encyclopédie d'Yverdon is an encyclopedia in French printed between 1770 and 1780 . It was published in Yverdon in Switzerland by the Italian Fortunato Bartolomeo De Felice (1723–1789) (called Fortuné-Barthélemy de Félice in French ). It is an important follow-up to the Encyclopédie by Denis Diderot and Jean Baptiste le Rond d'Alembert .
The work comprises 58 volumes in quarto format , which are divided into 42 text volumes, six suppléments (text volumes with additions) and ten table volumes (picture volumes with illustrations ). It has 37,378 pages, with around 75,000 articles and 1,200 illustrations. The entire print run of around 3,000 copies was sold by the Bernese Société Typographique and the bookseller Pierre Gosse in The Hague .
In contrast to other subsequent works of the Paris Encyclopedia, the Encyclopédie d'Yverdon is not a reprint or pirated edition, but a real new version. Felice had the text corpus edited by 34 authors, 27 of whom are known by name. They corrected erroneous articles, added incomplete articles and added numerous new articles. In addition, the religious-critical attitude of Diderot and d'Alembert's work was softened in Felice's edition and replaced by a Protestant perspective, which is why the work was sometimes called the "Protestant encyclopedia" and was particularly popular in Northern Europe.
