Gottlieb Emanuel von Haller

Gottlieb Emanuel von Haller (born October 17, 1735 in Bern ; † April 9, 1786 there ) was a Swiss historian .

Life

Gottlieb Emanuel von Haller, eldest son of the polymath Albrecht von Haller , studied medicine and botany from 1747 to 1753 in Göttingen , where his father taught . In 1753 he returned to Bern with his father, where he studied law and history . In 1760 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . In the same year he made a trip to Paris.

He then made a career in the Bernese civil service. In 1763 he was appointed vice librarian and in 1765 as clerk of the war council. In 1775 he joined the Grand Council and soon after took over the office of Grossweibels (Vice President of the City Court). In 1778 von Haller was elected a member of the Leopoldina . He belonged to the Académie des sciences in Paris as a corresponding member. In 1779 he was sent to the Diet of the Ennetbergische Vogteien as a Bernese diplomat . After his return in 1780 he took over the office of clerk (civil and criminal judge) in Bern. From 1785 until his death he was the governor of Nyon .

In 1761 he married Anna Margarethe Schultheß (1734-1810), a daughter of the director of the Zurich merchants' association, Hans Kaspar Schultheß (1709-1804) and the Regula Hirzel. The couple had six sons, three of whom died early, and four daughters. One of the sons was the politician Karl Ludwig von Haller .

Gottlieb Emanuel von Haller's estate is in the Burger Library in Bern . On a hill in Lausanne Dorigny, in front of which the new university library is now located, he erected an obelisk as a memorial to his father, Albrecht von Haller .

Writings and works (selection)

Gottlieb Emanuel von Haller published numerous works. As a student he wrote pamphlets against the Linnaeus system :

During his professional career, he published numerous works on libraries, numismatics and the history of Switzerland, some of which he wrote in German, some in French and Latin.

The latter is considered Haller's main work. Volumes one and two were published by Haller himself, and volumes three to six were edited by J. J. Stapfer, pastor of Bern, after his death. Haller had left the entire work ready for printing.
