The Cantonal and University Library of Lausanne (French Bibliothèque cantonale et universitaire de Lausanne , short BCU Lausanne or BCUL ) is a public institution with a cultural, academic and patrimonial mission. It has three other seats:

  • Dorigny library
  • Law and Business Library
  • Riponne Library

On March 14, 2011, a fourth seat, the library of Cèdres, was permanently closed.

Since the BCUL is subordinate to the cultural department of the canton, it serves both the university community and the wider Vaudois public. It collects all documentation related to the canton of Vaud .

history

In 1537 the Bernese founded the Lausanne Academy. At the same time, the academy's library was probably built, which was initially only open to professors. It was not until 1750 that students were given the right to inspect the library's books for two hours a week. In 1806 the academy library became the canton library , in 1898 the canton and university library . A reading room open to the public was opened in 1825. The Palais de Rumine , which housed the cantonal and university library, was inaugurated in 1906.

In 1938, cantonal law on the deposit copy came into force, from then on the BCUL had to submit a copy of every work published in the canton . The Fonothek opened in 1966. The computerized library system SIBIL (Système informatisé pour les bibliothèques de Lausanne) developed the cantonal and university library in 1971. From 1977 to 1982 the university collections were transferred to Dorigny. In 1982 the parish library (later the library of Cèdres) was subordinated to the BCUL. In 1985, the BCUL took part in the formation of the RERO library network in western Switzerland (Réseau romand des bibliothèques), in which all the libraries involved share an overall catalog. A media library was opened in Dorigny in 1990. In 1997, BCUL and RERO gave up their library system SIBIL in favor of the US system VTLS . In 2007, BCUL was the first library in the French-speaking region to sign a partnership agreement with Google as part of the Google Book Search project .

In 2016, the canton of Vaud, and with it BCUL, left the RERO library network and created its own Vaud network called Renouvaud . It comprises 110 libraries and is based on the Alma library system from the Ex Libris Group .
