Jacob Reinbold Spielmann (born March 31, 1722 in Strasbourg ; † September 9, 1783 there ) was a French pharmacist , physician and chemist .

Life

The Spielmanns family can be traced back to Strasbourg in the 15th century. Johann Jakob Spielmann, the father of Jacob Reinbold, acquired the pharmacy "Zum (golden) Hirschen" ( Pharmacie du Cerf ) from Albrecht Weßner, his wife's grandfather, in 1657 . The pharmacy was in the same place as early as 1348, possibly even 1268. Today it is the oldest pharmacy in France. Jacob Reinbold was taught by his father in the local pharmacy. It is still located in Rue de Mercière in Strasbourg today .

Spielmann passed his pharmacist examination in Strasbourg as early as 1742. In the following years he ran his parents' pharmacy. In 1755 he became professor of medicine at the University of Strasbourg , in 1756 for poetry and in 1759 for medicine, chemistry and pharmacognosy . Later he still worked in his parents' pharmacy and even gave lectures there. In 1760 he was elected a member ( matriculation no. 631 ) of the Leopoldina with the academic surname Heraclides IV . In 1764 he became an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg . From 1772 he was a corresponding member of the Académie des sciences .

During his studies in Strasbourg from April 1770 to August 1771, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe followed Spielmann's lectures at the University of Strasbourg and in the deer pharmacy during the winter semester. From Spielmann he also adopted the expression encheiresin naturae (literally translated: "Access of nature"). Spielmann meant that natural forces connect the components of a substance to a whole.
