Friedrich August Flückiger (born May 15, 1828 in Langenthal ; † December 11, 1894 in Bern ; legal resident in Rohrbach ) was a Swiss pharmacist and chemist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Flück. ".

Life

Friedrich August Flückiger was born the son of the hardware dealer Friedrich (1787–1841, father: Hans Flückiger, farmer ), the mother was Anna Maria geb. Gygax (1786-1866). He graduated from elementary school in Langenthal and high school in Burgdorf . Since he was supposed to be a businessman like his father , he visited the Noback trading establishment in Berlin in 1845 . He finally turned to the natural sciences and studied chemistry at the University of Berlin from 1845 to 1847 . In 1847 he went to Solothurn , where he completed an apprenticeship as a pharmacist until 1849. In 1850 he studied botany at the University of Geneva ; in the same year he became an assistant at the University of Strasbourg . In 1851 he went to Heidelberg University , where he studied chemistry with Leopold Gmelin and Friedrich Wilhelm Hermann Delffs and received his doctorate in 1852 . He stayed in Paris for a year to study and also traveled through London .

In 1853 Flückiger acquired the large pharmacy in Burgdorf . His friend, the merchant Friedrich Lüdy, was appointed head of the wholesale drug business. From 1857 to 1866 Flückiger was President of the Swiss Pharmacists' Association . In 1860, he sets the Pharmacopoeia Helvetica before, yet there was only cantonal pharmacopoeia .

From 1860 to 1873 Flückiger was the state pharmacist in Bern, where he mainly supervised accounting and was thus able to concentrate more on scientific work. In 1861 he received his habilitation for pharmacognosy at the University of Bern and was appointed lecturer . In 1867 he published the textbook of the pharmacognosy of the plant kingdom , which established the field of knowledge in particular. In the same year he traveled to London at the invitation of Daniel Hanburry (1825–1875), where he made friends with this. In 1870 Flückiger was appointed associate professor for pharmacy and pharmacognosy at the University of Bern .

In 1873 Flückiger became a full professor of pharmacy at the University of Strasbourg and director of the Strasbourg Pharmaceutical Institute. During this time he enjoyed international renown, so he was made an honorary doctorate in medicine in Bern in 1884 and an honorary doctorate in philosophy in Erlangen in 1892 . He was also an honorary member of several scientific societies.

In 1892 he returned to Bern, where he received the Flückiger Foundation , a medal and a cash payment from his friends . In the next time Flückiger researched archives for a work on the history of pharmacy, but had to realize that he would not be able to cope with this work. Nevertheless, he was able to lay a building block for the activities of the International Society for the History of Pharmacy .

Flückiger died in Bern in 1894 at the age of 66. He had published about 300 articles in professional journals.
