Senate of Eswatini

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Senate of Eswatini is the upper house in the bicameral system of parliament from Eswatini . The Senate can introduce or pass laws, with the exception of the Budget Act. However, the laws must first be presented in the House of Commons , the House of Assembly of Eswatini .

composition

The Senate has a maximum of 31 members. The king appoints 20 of the members and the remaining ten are elected by the House of Assembly. Of these, at least eight out of twenty or five out of ten must be women. However, these numbers are often not reached.

choice

The election takes place secretly in a first-past-the-post system of voting . All senators are elected for five years. Senators must be at least 18 years of age, citizens, registered voters and have paid all taxes (“have paid all taxes or made arrangements satisfactory to the Commissioner of Taxes”).

history

A new constitution was adopted in July 2005. The first election under the new constitution was held in September 2008. Gelane Zwane was elected President of the Senate for the third time without an opponent. Ngomuyayona Gamedze became Vice President. Six of the senators called by the king were family members.

At the end of 2013, the Senate banned members of parliament from getting divorced in order to “avoid embarrassing the king”.
