Wilhelmine von Gersdorff

Charlotte Eleonore Wilhelmine von Gersdorff , also Gersdorf , (born October 28, 1768 in Ober Bellmannsdorf , Markgraftum Oberlausitz ; † February 11, 1847 in Dresden , Kingdom of Saxony ) was a German writer and poet. She also wrote under numerous pseudonyms.

Life

Wilhelmine von Gersdorff was the daughter of the government councilor and Canon Kaspar Friedrich von Gersdorff (1736–1795) and Christiane Eleonore von Uechtritz (1737–1808). She grew up in Upper Bellmann village and Seidenberg in what was then the Saxon electors below Margravate Oberlausitz on. Encouraged by her father and her governess, the writer Dorothee Henriette von Runkel (also Runckel, 1724–1800), she showed early writing talent in rural solitude. Around 1784 the husband of her friend Sophie Albrecht is said to have published the novel Familie Walberg by the then 16-year-olds against her will. There is evidence of a Prague print from 1792. Since 1789 she has published poems.

In 1792 she married the chamberlain Friedrich August Gottlob von Gersdorff (1765–1836) and moved to his estate in Biesig near Reichenbach / Oberlausitz . After its sale, she lived in Bautzen and from 1811 in Dresden, where she died in 1847. She had eight children, five of whom died under the age of 18. The husband of her eldest daughter Adelheid Therese Amalie (1798–1848) was the bibliographer Carl Wilhelm Otto August von Schindel .

Pseudonyms

The prolific writer also wrote as Eleonore F., Minna, Glycere, J. van der Hall, W. von Morgenstern, FPE Richter, P. Richter and W. v. G. It only published under its own name from 1817 onwards. “With fearful care she maintained her anonymity for 20 years,” says the lexicographer Franz Brümmer . The choice of pseudonyms was a common means among women writers in the 18th century to hide their identity but to identify themselves as feminine. “Against the harsh and unfair judgments that the young writer received out of envy or prejudice against female education”, she defended herself in the Lausitz magazine . Who hid behind some of the early pseudonyms could be known to contemporaries through their inclusion in a reference work.
