August Ferdinand Bernhardi (born June 24, 1769 in Berlin ; † June 1, 1820 there ) was a German linguist and writer .

His parents were Johann Christian Bernhardii (1738–1815) - Chief Justice Commissioner in Berlin - and his wife Christine Hilke from Magdeburg . One of his ancestors is Bartholomäus Bernhardi (1487–1551), the first Protestant rector of the University of Wittenberg and provost of Kemberg .

After studying philosophy at the University of Halle (Saale), Bernhardi became a teacher at the Friedrichwerder Gymnasium in Berlin in 1791 - his students included a. a. Ludwig Tieck and Wilhelm Heinrich Wackenroder - and in 1808 its director. In 1815 he became a member of the Berlin consistory and the scientific examination committee. Shortly before his death he was appointed director of the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Gymnasium . He belonged to the inner circle of the school reformers of neo-humanism around Wilhelm von Humboldt .

Since 1799 Bernhardi was married to Sophie Tieck , the sister of the writer Ludwig Tiecks and the sculptor Christian Friedrich Tiecks . However, the marriage was dissolved again in 1805. This relationship brought him into the circle of romantics, namely Friedrich and August Wilhelm Schlegel , as well as Ludwig Tieck et al. He joined the Nordsternbund founded in 1804 by Adelbert von Chamisso and Karl August Varnhagen and took part in the collective novel The Trials and Obstacles of Charles , in which except those also wrote Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué and Wilhelm Neumann . In addition, he joined the lawless society in Berlin in 1810 .

In addition to his linguistic works, Bernhardi also published satirical writings on Berlin's social and literary life and wrote articles for literary magazines and almanacs ( Athenaeum , Europe ...). He also wrote his own stories and poems in the sense of romanticism , the most famous poem is The Lion in Florence . However, August Ferdinand Bernhardi achieved fame and reputation primarily through his work as a linguist, with which he exerted a great influence on the work of Wilhelm von Humboldt and Franz Bopp .

The writer Wilhelm Bernhardi and the historian Theodor von Bernhardi came from his marriage to Sophie Tieck .
