Wilhelm Bernhardi (writer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Wilhelm Bernhardi (born July 15, 1800 in Berlin ; † August 24, 1878 there ) was a German writer.

After his parents divorced, he was given to his father , August Ferdinand Bernhardi, and moved from Munich to Berlin in 1809. In March 1815, his uncle Ludwig Tieck recommended him to his friend Friedrich von Raumer , professor of history at Berlin University, with the words: “He wishes to study history and philology, is poor and somewhat hypochondriac […]: I think that many forces and capacities fight in it ”. He worked as a journalist, theater critic, dramaturge and Shakespeare researcher.

His publications include Friedrich Wilhelm the Great, Elector of Brandenburg and the first sovereign Duke of Prussia: a memorial for the second secular celebration of his accession to the throne (1840), the General German Song Lexicon or a complete collection of all known German songs and folk chants in alphabetical order (1844 ) and the translations John Milton - Politische Hauptschriften , published from 1874 to 1879 .

He must not be confused with his son, the teacher and historian Wilhelm Bernhardi , as is often the case in library catalogs. His brother was the later ennobled Theodor von Bernhardi .
