Carl Friedrich Kaltschmied

Carl Friedrich Kaltschmied (also: Karl Friedrich Kaltschmied, Kaltschmid; * May 21, 1706 in Breslau ; † November 6, 1769 in Jena ) was the ducal Saxon-Weimar Privy Councilor and professor of anatomy, surgery and botany at the University of Jena .

Life

Carl Friedrich was born the son of the merchant and chief mill clerk Christian Friedrich Kaltschmid and his wife Eva Rosina Exner. In 1715 he moved to the Elisabeth Gymnasium in Breslau , which was under the direction of Rector Gottlob Kranz (1660–1733). From 1726 Kaltschmied studied law at the University of Jena , then turned to medicine and received his doctorate in 1732 under Hermann Friedrich Teichmeyer with the thesis De cancro in specie mammarum .

In 1735 he completed his habilitation with the thesis Disp. med. de vulnere hepatis curato, cum disquisitione in lethalitatem vulnerum hepatis . In 1736 he was appointed court advisor and personal physician by the Duke of Saxony-Eisenach . In 1738 he became professor extraordinarius at the University of Jena . In 1745 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

In 1746 he became a full professor of medicine. Kaltschmid also took part in the university's organizational tasks and was rector of the alma mater in the winter semesters of 1749, 1755, 1759, and 1765 .

In 1755 he was elevated to the position of Privy Councilor by the Duke of Saxony-Weimar. After Hamberger's death, he became the first medical professor and he also received the post of Provincial Physikus . He was an external assessor at the Kur-Mainz Academy of Useful Sciences, and in 1761 a member of the princely German society of fine and higher sciences.
