Johann Adolph Wedel also: Wedelius (born August 17, 1675 in Jena ; † February 23, 1747 ibid) was a German physician .

Life

Johann Adolph was the son of Georg Wolfgang Wedel . He had initially received private tuition and from the age of thirteen attended grammar school in Merseburg . In 1692 began studying philosophical and medical sciences at the University of Jena. Here, especially in physics Caspar Posner , as well as Johann Andreas Schmid and in mathematics Georg Albrecht Hamberger (1662-1716) were his teachers. He completed his medical studies with his father, with Rudolph Wilhelm Krause (1642–1718), Günther Christoph Schelhammer and Johann Adrian Slevogt . In the meantime he studied for a year at the University of Leipzig with Johannes Bohn , August Quirinus Rivinus and Johann Wilhelm Pauli (1658–1723). When he returned to Jena in 1697, he acquired the degree of Master of Philosophy. On May 1, 1697, he was accepted among the medical candidates, was licentiate on August 4, 1697 and received his doctorate in the same year on December 21st as a doctor of medicine. Then he completed a gentlemen's journey, traveling via Hamburg and Kiel, first to the Netherlands and then to England. Back in Jena, he took part in the disputation operation of the Salana and in 1699 became court physician and personal physician to Count von Plauen Heinrich the XIII von Reuss (older line).

Although he was offered a position as personal physician in Sachsen Weimar in 1701, he remained in the service of the Reussian count, where he was able to follow his inclination for architecture, as a supervisor for the building industry in Schleiz. When his brother Ernst Heinrich Wedel (1655–1709) died as an associate professor of medicine in Jena, he received his extraordinary professorship in medicine at the Jena University, as well as the city physics in Dorneburg and Bürgel. In 1713 he became a full professor of medicine in Jena, in 1718 received the post of electoral Saxon and royal Polish personal physician, and in 1727 rose to the first professorship in medicine and chemistry. In 1727 he became Councilor of Saxony-Eisenach , in 1734 he turned down an appointment at the University of Göttingen and on February 11, 1725, with the nickname Hercules IV. Member ( matriculation no. 375 ) of the Leopoldina . He also took part in the organizational tasks of the Jena University. He was dean of the medical faculty several times and in the winter semesters 1713, 1725, 1731 and 1737 rector of the alma mater .

Wedel married on October 18, 1703 in Greiz with Clara Maria Beck, the daughter of the superintendent in Greiz Wolfgang Beck (* Reichenbach / Saxony; † June 10, 1698 in Greiz) and his wife Maria Seidel. Numerous children came from the marriage, but they died young. The only surviving daughter Sophia Margarethe Wedel (April 24, 1762) married the doctor Georg Erhard Hamberger in 1724 .
