Ernst Julius Gurlt

Ernst Julius Gurlt (born September 13, 1825 in Berlin ; † January 8, 1899 in Berlin) was a German surgeon and medical historian .

Life

Ernst Gurlt was a son of the veterinarian Ernst Friedrich Gurlt . He himself was a student of Bernhard von Langenbeck . After studying medicine (1844 to 1848), he qualified as a professor for surgery in Berlin in 1853 and became an associate professor in 1862. He was a professor at the Kaiser Wilhelm Academy for over a decade .

In his first report on anesthesia statistics in 1891, he reported 24,625 anesthetics. His sixth and last report in 1897 gives information about the years 1895/96 (29,526 anesthetics) and 1896/97 (32,009 anesthetics). Among other things, he asked about "bad coincidences during and after the anesthesia" (asphyxia and deaths). The statistics were one of the first quality assurance measures and led to the more frequent use of ether instead of chloroform.

His three-volume history of surgery and its practice from 1898 is essentially limited to a “pure content analysis of individual works”. He worked on the book for 15 years. He also wrote articles for the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie .

Gurlt died of influenza pneumonia on January 8, 1899, while serving as the Privy Medical Councilor.
