Volker Skierka

Volker Skierka (born September 21, 1952 in Rheinfelden (Baden) ) is a German journalist and author .

Life

After graduating from secondary school , he began an apprenticeship as a technical draftsman , which he completed in 1972. Then he volunteered at the Nürnberger Nachrichten . He is a member of the PEN Center Germany .

From 1975 he worked as a correspondent for the Reuters news agency , a. a. in Bavaria, Bonn, and most recently in West Berlin , from where he also reported on the GDR . In 1979 he moved to the Süddeutsche Zeitung , but stayed as a correspondent in West Berlin for another six years. After further positions in Hamburg and Latin America, Skierka moved from SZ to Merian in 1992 , where he was editor-in-chief for five years. As a Feuchtwanger biographer, he campaigned for the preservation of Villa Aurora , Lion Feuchtwanger's former home in Los Angeles, in the late 1980s .

He was awarded the Egon-Erwin-Kisch Prize in 1980 for his work Irgendwannt dich 'ne eine Wut packs you in the SZ .

Skierka has worked as a freelance writer since 1997, a. a. for Die Zeit , stern , Spiegel , Deutschlandradio , DLF , and NDR . Skierka lives in Hamburg .
