The Alto Gállego is a comarca ( administrative unit ) of the autonomous region of Aragon in Spain . It is located in the north of the region in the province of Huesca on the upper reaches of the Gállego River . The comarca has an area of 1,359.8 km² and 14,447 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2013).
History and geography
The comarca was formed by the law of the Autonomous Community of Aragon of July 2, 2001, which also contains the basic provisions of its constitution.
The seat of the comarca is Sabiñánigo , the largest of the eight associated municipalities (Municipios) with around 70% of their inhabitants.
Alto Gállego originally belonged to Jacetania , the core of the former county of Aragón . The comarca borders in the west on the Jacetania, in the north on France , in the east on the comarcas Sobrarbe and Somontano de Barbastro and in the south on the Hoya de Huesca .
The associated municipalities are: Biescas , Caldearenas , Hoz de Jaca , Panticosa , Sabiñánigo , Sallent de Gállego , Yebra de Basa and Yesero .
