Grañén is a Spanish municipality in the Huesca province of the autonomous community of Aragon . It is located in the Comarca of Monegros on a small hill on the Río Flumen on the railway line from Tardienta to Lleida .

history
The place can be traced back to Roman times; the name is derived from a landowner Granius. After the Reconquista , Sancho Íñiguez was the first landlord . In 1198 King Peter II transferred the patronage of the church of Grañén to the Bishop of Huesca and in 1258 King James I gave the castle and the town of Grañén to Blasco de Maza as a fief . In the 16th century, Grañén passed to the Dukes of Villahermosa. In 1785 it was elevated to a country town (villa).
