history
In and around Sariñena there were agricultural settlements as early as Roman times, of which numerous remains are still present. The place, recaptured by the Moors in 1100, was located in the area of irrigation systems ("acequias") in the Middle Ages and was a prosperous center of grain cultivation.
During the civil war , the area was initially in the Republican- controlled part of Spain. South of Sariñenas, on the border with Albalatillo , a field airfield was built at the beginning of the fighting , which was used in particular by Polikarpow I-15 fighter planes of the Red Army . In the course of the Aragon offensive , the area fell to the National Spaniards in March 1938. From the end of March 1938 Sariñena served the German Condor Legion for about two months as a base, including for Heinkel He 45 reconnaissance aircraft. The Italian Aviazione Legionaria then used the space until the end of the war. Remnants including the concrete runway a few hundred meters long still exist.
